Unlike how school works, your boss won’t tell you about every thing that goes into the office. Your coworkers aren’t going to tell you either. On one hand, there are rules and on the other hand, there are these unsaid workplace norms. It’s not all about nailing the dress code and reaching work on time in the office. There’s a secret code that is being followed since ages unknown and we’re just going to reveal it all.
Here are those 12 unsaid workplace norms that nobody will tell you about!
1. Scheduling a meeting without preparing for it
If you’re going to call everyone else up, you better have a solid point for it. Wasting your employees time for a series of ‘ah and um’ is definitely not helping the company.
2. Showing up sick and spreading it
Well, it’s great that one is very dedicated to working. But what’s the point of coming in the office with a viral and gifting it to others? It’s not Christmas when you are sick.
3. Playing loud music
You might like to play music when you’re all done with work, but there are other people still working there. In fact, it’s called a ‘workplace’.
4. Not replying to important emails
It’s a complete no. It’s very important to keep a regular check on your emails and reply to them on time. Will do after 5 minutes eventually turns into will be done after 5 days in the blink of an eye.
5. Replying ‘to all’ every time!
In contrast, replying ‘to all’ when it’s clearly not needed, attaches annoyance of its own with the mail.
6. Starting a conversation in the bathroom stall
Do we really have to ask this random question while peeing? We can always talk about it when we are a little more free and fine.
7. Not flushing properly
Where are those manners? The boss might be the next person who’ll go into the same stall, you know.
8. Trying to talk when someone is engrossed in work
Just like you want to work in complete silence, the other person does too. Therefore, trying to talk to someone who is working is not a good thing.
9. Taking your co-worker’s things without asking
You know how burrowing works? You have to ask politely to get something that you wanted and hence, increase your chances of getting it. Nobody wants to be called a thief.
10. Typing loudly
Like playing music, typing loudly on that keyboard disturbs us. Silence, please.
11. Trying to take over other’s work
Here’s the biggest unsaid norm, you don’t mess with someone’s work and you’ll have no enemies messing with yours. It’s a work place, not a battleground.
12. Crying about your family issues in the office
Please, no. Nobody wants to hear what Emily did to you or what happened to your pet snake. Taking your family matters in the professional space is highly unprofessional.
